On 16 May 1940, a RAAF Avro Anson aircraft with serial A4-4, crashed into the north east face of Mount Torbreck, 300 metres below the summit. All four men on board were killed. Mount Torbreck is located in central Victoria, not far from the townships of Eildon and Snobs Creek.
On 23 January 1941 eight months after the aircraft disappeared, two local men (Messrs Stan Sawyers and John Fry) discovered the lost Avro Anson and bodies of the crew - Flying Officer Anthony Daniel and Corporal's Francis Hyland, Herman Sass & Ivan Stowdor approximately 300 metres below the summit of Mount Torbreck on the north east face.
At 3:15am the next day (Friday 24 January), a recovery party left for the crash site in order to bring the bodies of the four men back to Alexandra.
In 1966 at the instigation of the Hyland family, a memorial dedicated to the crew was built by the RAAF close to the crash site.
Access to the memorial site is via a 2.4 kilometre uphill walk along the Avro Anson Memorial Track. The walking track is medium grade with some obstacles. One to one-and-a-half hours return depending on fitness levels....
