It almost didn't happen ... John (the boss) was going away on the days that we were going to be in town. But when I rang him "leave it with me", he said. So I did. Luckily, he tracked his old mate Gary down to step in in his absence. Gary has been around Darwin one way or another for some 50 years (with some breaks in between), and knows a lot. We strolled and talked slowly through the centre of town, and learned about the bombing of Darwin on 19 Feb 1942, plus a lot more on top of that. Great experience. Thanks.
On a hot march afternoon, John met us promptly and gave us an interesting, varied, and knowledgeable walk through the dark days that engulfed WWII Darwin. We trekked past surviving buildings of the Feb. 1942 Japanese air raid that marked the start of repeated attacks against this important military port and city. John kept us in the shade, stopped periodically in air-conditioned buildings, and made sure we were comfortable throughout the two-hour walk. We visited the historic waterfront, learned about the aftermath of the attacks, and how Darwin honors those who fell even today. John also advised on easy transportation back to our ship--he went above and beyond. Highly recommended tour with an enthusiastic local historian. Thank you!
Sure the pools and the markets and the food are all great but Darwin has something else to offer - a totally fascinating history. And in the hands of John, our walking tour guide, Darwin's history comes to life over two extremely enjoyable hours, full of great stories as we stop off at key locations around the CBD and harbour area. I totally loved it, and my 12-year-old son was also captivated by the experience. Personally I found it added a lot to our time in Darwin. Many thanks to John, I could not recommend this highly enough. Matt and Henry
John, the tour guide was very friendly and informative. The tour included some of the local history and landmarks as well as historic war history. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in knowing more about Darwin's past. It's an easy walk and John ensured all stops were under shade. It was a nice touch at ths end when John gave me a couple of ANZAC biscuits. Great experience, thank you.
